Kayla Takakura is the Outreach and Education Associate at Mauna Kahālāwai Watershed Partnership, a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting West Maui's native forests and freshwater resources through collaborative watershed management and conservation.

Raised in Wailuku, Maui, Kayla has long been passionate about the island's unique ecosystems and the connection between healthy forests, clean water, and thriving communities. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science and, prior to joining the partnership, worked with several conservation organizations on Maui, including the Maui Forest Bird Recovery Project, where she contributed efforts to combat avian malaria and help protect Maui's endangered native honeycreepers from extinction. These experiences deepened her commitment to environmental stewardship and reinforced the importance of safeguarding Hawaiʻi's natural resources for future generations.

Guided by the value of mālama ʻāina, Kayla believes in giving back to the land that sustains us. Through education, outreach, and community engagement, she hopes to inspire others to care for the forests and watersheds that provide clean water, support native species, and can help build a resilient future for Maui's communities.
